Google, Nvidia, Anthropic Coalition Targets 100 GW for Data Center Grid Capacity

Emerald AI's technology could unlock up to 100 gigawatts of additional capacity for data centers on the grid. This initiative is spearheaded by a coalition that includes Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic, alongside utility partners such as AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. The coalition aims to optimize grid usage by limiting maximum consumption to 90% for several hours, which could free up 76 gigawatts of capacity.

Emerald AI recently raised $150 million in Series A funding, led by Energize Capital with participation from DCVC. The company’s chief scientist, Ayse Coskun, stated that their technology could mitigate the industry's demand for new generating sources, though it won't completely eliminate that need.

This initiative follows a growing trend in the AI and energy sectors to enhance the efficiency of existing infrastructure rather than solely relying on new energy generation. The coalition's efforts will be showcased at an event in San Francisco from October 13 to 15, with the last day to book an exhibit table being September 18.
