DetectifAI Founder Tarini Padmanabhuni Tackles Deepfake Voice Scams

Tarini Padmanabhuni founded DetectifAI in response to a deepfake voice incident that deceived her grandfather two years ago. The FBI reported that Americans lost $900 million to AI-driven scams last year, marking a 24% increase from 2024. DetectifAI currently handles 100,000 calls monthly for financial institutions in India, focusing on detecting deepfake voices.

Padmanabhuni, who began working in machine learning at age 12, aims to provide a solution to the growing threat of AI-driven scams. She stated, "What stayed with me wasn’t the money, it was that he had no way of telling," emphasizing the emotional impact of such scams.

DetectifAI competes with companies like Reality Defender, Pindrop, Resemble AI, Microsoft Azure AI Content Safety, and Nuance, all of which are also focused on deepfake voice detection. Padmanabhuni believes that the first phone maker to integrate DetectifAI will gain a competitive edge.

Investors Josh Constine and Manohar Kamath are backing Padmanabhuni's venture, which will be showcased at the TechCrunch Disrupt competition from October 13-15, 2023. This follows a trend of increasing interest in AI safety technologies as scams proliferate.
