Google Launches WeatherNext 3 with 1-Hour Forecast Updates and 5 km Resolution

On September 3, 2026, Google introduced WeatherNext 3, an advanced global weather AI model that generates hourly forecasts at multiple spatial resolutions. Compared to its predecessor, WeatherNext 2, this model is five times sharper, with a spatial resolution of 5 kilometers for temperature and moisture visualization, and 10 kilometers for other surface variables. Atmospheric variables like wind speed are forecasted at a resolution of 25 kilometers. WeatherNext 3 updates its forecasts every hour, a significant improvement over the 6-hour increments of WeatherNext 2. The model forecasts wind speeds at a height of 100 meters, enhancing its utility for wind-energy output. Google claims that WeatherNext 3 learns directly from real-time observations and resolves intricate local topography, allowing it to deliver localized, high-fidelity forecasting to billions of people.
