Google DeepMind Commits $40M to Genesis Mission for Scientific Discovery

Google DeepMind has committed $40 million to the Genesis Mission, announced on July 22, 2026, during the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026. This initiative aims to advance scientific discovery through AI technologies like AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding and discovery agent, and tools such as AlphaFold 3 for protein structure prediction and AlphaGenome for DNA variation analysis. The collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) has led to significant improvements in laboratory processes. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon from NLR noted that deploying Gemini in their instruments reduced microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to approximately 13 minutes, an eightfold increase in efficiency, and cut the manual steps for focusing an image from 50 to just 2.
