OpenAI Fires Contractors for Using AI Tools in Training Process

OpenAI has terminated multiple contractors for using AI tools, including GPTZero, while training its AI models. Over ten thousand contractors are employed by OpenAI, with at least three individuals speaking to 404 Media about their experiences. Two of these contractors were associated with Mercor, an AI-training company. An internal document warned employees against using AI detection tools or AI itself, stating, "Do not use AI detection tools, or AI yourself." One anonymous contractor reflected, "I’m not a bad person or worker. I just needed a little boost and turned to AI to help me which eventually led to my downfall." This incident follows the recent unveiling of Project Lily by 404 Media, which highlights the complexities of AI training practices. Mercor emphasized that their experts are hired for their judgment and expertise, which are crucial for the advancement of AI.
