Huawei to Launch Ascend 960DT AI Chip in Q1 2027, Doubling Performance

Huawei's Ascend 960DT AI chip is slated for launch in Q1 2027, ahead of its previously scheduled Q3 2027 release. The new chip is expected to double the performance of the existing Ascend 960 chips, as confirmed by a Huawei spokesperson. The Ascend 960DT will utilize the Peerium Computing Architecture, which aims to enhance AI processing capabilities. The Atlas 950 SuperCluster, featuring a capacity of 256,000 accelerator cards, will support this architecture, while the Atlas 950 SuperPoD will utilize a smaller configuration of 4,096 Ascend 960 chips. This follows Huawei's earlier scaling claim of 15,488 chips in the Atlas 960 SuperPoD. Rui Ma, a China tech analyst, noted that the earlier-than-expected chip release indicates a shift in Huawei's strategy, while Eric Xu, Huawei’s rotating chairman, emphasized the need for Chinese companies to advance in semiconductor technology to mitigate risks associated with powerful AI systems. This move positions Huawei as a direct competitor to Nvidia in the AI chip market.
