Energy Dome has signed a deal with Google to develop a 200 megawatt-hour carbon dioxide battery plant in Ireland, expected to be operational by 2028. This facility will be capable of powering approximately 18,000 Italian homes for 10 hours. Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Milan, Italy, Energy Dome aims to establish a total planned capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours across five continents. The company's technology is estimated to be 10% to 15% cheaper than traditional lithium-ion batteries for eight-hour energy storage systems, with a roundtrip efficiency of 70%, compared to 90% for lithium-ion and 50% for some iron-air batteries. The first commercial plant in Sardinia, Italy, is set to be turned on in 2025, following a timeline that sees a two-year period from contract signing to capacity delivery. This partnership with Google follows Energy Dome's recent advancements in carbon dioxide battery technology, which leverages compressed gas for energy storage, a method utilities have utilized for decades.
