Databricks Launches IP Functions for Enhanced Network Analytics

Databricks has made its IP Functions generally available on Databricks Runtime 18.3+, enabling high-performance network analytics. These built-in functions allow users to parse and analyze IP data directly in SQL, addressing a historical challenge in handling IP addresses.

The optimization engine, Photon, facilitates IP CIDR joins that are 3.1x faster and 6.4x cheaper than those in another leading cloud data warehouse. This capability is particularly beneficial for organizations processing large volumes of data; for instance, a major financial firm processes 30TB of data daily using these functions.

In benchmark scenarios, the IP Functions can handle up to 10 billion IPs and 10 million CIDR blocks, showcasing their scalability. Stanby, a data engineering leader, noted that the native IP functions enable direct work with IP and CIDR data in SQL, streamlining workflows. Dara Kharabi, Practice Lead for AI & Data at Rearc, emphasized the efficiency gained by parsing, validating, and joining IP data directly in SQL.

This release follows Databricks' recent advancements in manufacturing data integration and real-time decision-making tools, further enhancing its analytics capabilities. The introduction of IP Functions positions Databricks as a competitive player in the network observability space, directly impacting how organizations can build and optimize their data analytics workflows.
